The College of Agriculture Extension Training Service spearheaded a vital conservation initiative through the project titled Safeguarding Indigenous Wisdom: Empowering Conservation Measures for the Deer Hunting Traditions in Pasil, Kalinga. Led by Dr. Ruby Orange B. Agyao, the training emphasized the role of indigenous knowledge in sustainable wildlife management and conservation.
Implemented by KSU in collaboration with the Barangay Local Government Unit (BLGU) of Colayo, the training was held in Colayo, Pasil on January 9, 2025, bringing together youth and students, teachers, BLGU officials and conservation advocates to discuss sustainable hunting practices.
The initiative aimed to highlight the invaluable contributions of indigenous wisdom in the conservation of native deer species in Colayo. By incorporating traditional practices with modern conservation techniques, the project sought to ensure the sustainability of hunting traditions while protecting biodiversity.
The training focused on three key objectives aimed at enhancing conservation efforts for native deer populations. It emphasized the vital roles of both men and women in conservation initiatives and highlighted their contributions to sustainable deer species management. Additionally, the program sought to raise awareness among the participants regarding animal welfare policies, gender equality in biodiversity conservation, and the significance of sustainable hunting practices in maintaining ecological balance. Furthermore, the training aimed to establish strong partnerships between local communities, government agencies, and conservation organizations to reinforce and implement effective conservation strategies.
Funded by KSU, this initiative underscores the university’s commitment to preserving cultural heritage while advocating responsible environmental stewardship. Participants expressed their appreciation for the program, acknowledging the significance of integrating indigenous wisdom with scientific approaches to wildlife conservation.
With ongoing efforts to foster collaboration and awareness, KSU and its partners continue to pave the way for sustainable conservation measures that honor both cultural traditions and environmental responsibility.
